Getting Started

Dear Sixth Form Students,

DSTC’s Getting Started in Sixth Form is a unique and enjoyable approach to Sixth Form induction for Year 11 students after they have completed their GCSE exams. Getting Started is a 3 day programme of taster lessons, enrichment activities and orientation activities aimed at providing Year 11 students an insight into the range of subjects we offer as well as preparing them for life in Sixth Form.

Students are required to sign up for the 3 days but are then given the freedom to choose their own pathway through these days. There are at least two lessons running for each subject, so if students are undecided about the subjects they would like to study, they can attend lessons in as many subjects as they wish. In addition to this students are given a dedicated Form Tutor for these 3 days, who will be available to help and support them and all students have full access to the Sixth Form facilities.

Feedback from the students attending Getting Started is excellent with over 90% of students rating this as good or excellent and 93% of students saying that attending Getting Started has made them more likely to attend DSTC6th.

The Getting Started Programme varies each year and is delivered by DSTC staff as well as guest speakers. In 2018 the enrichment activities included: CV and Personal statement writing tutorials delivered by Connexions; First Aid; Introduction to Higher Education delivered by ambassadors form the University of Kent; Team Building delivered by the National Citizenship Service as well as e-Safety and Financial Awareness courses. In addition this, we were delighted to hold our second Year 11 Careers Fair with 16 local and national employers attending from a variety of sectors.

At the end of the 3 days, students are provided with additional summer learning tasks, which are designed to bridge the gap between GCSE and A Level study and will help students to make a positive start to Year 12.

The links below give you access to the summer learning tasks set in our Getting Started sessions in June 2018. Please make sure you access these materials over the Summer break so you are ready for your Induction in September 2018.
