DSTC Bushcraft Weekend

Dear Parent/Carer

Bushcraft Friday 41   May to Sunday 61  May 2018

I am planning to run a Bushcraft weekend visit to Penshurst Place, Tonbridge on Friday 4th May to Sunday 6th  May I ran this visit a couple of years ago and we had an amazing time.

This is an unusual and exciting opportunity for students and comprises  of a three-day residential course which involves students in a range of hands-on activities, giving them the chance to really get to grips with life in the outdoors and providing them with a unique environment  in which to learn and interact.

The course is structured so that activities alternate between group lectures and practical activities, to enable students to put the skills they are taught into immediate use.  Students will work together in small groups of ten to fifteen, each of which will be assigned a group leader from our staff, allowing every student the opportunity to really contribute to the collaborative effort required.

Whilst content is strongly linked to the National Curriculum, the course offers students the chance to excel away from conventional classroom  standards, intending to inspire a positive attitude to learning as they develop new skill sets in new and exciting surroundings. Students will finish the course with a sense of achievement, confidence in their

ability to live and operate in an outdoor environment, as well as a greater understanding of the British landscape.

Time spent living in the wild offers a fantastic opportunity to interact away from the distractions of everyday school life, taking students out of their comfort zones, encouraging  both independence and teamwork.  The course is a fantastic step towards the development of leadership  skills, as it demands resourcefulness, creativity, and teamwork.

For more information please look at: http://www.thebushcraftcompany. com for an idea of what the students will be doing, itinerary and ‘kit’ list.  Please note that students will be sleeping in bell tents in groups of 10.

Students  will need to be dropped off at Penshurst Place  by 5pm on Friday 41  May and be picked  up at 3pm on Sunday 6th May. Penshurst Place is roughly 35 minutes from DSTC.

Due to College staff and student  ratio this visit will be offered to the first  80 students.
