In both French and Spanish, we aim to develop students’ understanding of the language and the variety of cultures in the French and Spanish-speaking world.  We also aim to develop students’ confidence to express themselves, gauge their own progress and work effectively as part of a team.

In Key stage 3, students are assessed each half term in listening, speaking, reading and writing.  All students are assessed according to the 1-9 GCSE grading system.

In French, year 7 students are studying the following topics:

  • Personal information/likes and dislikes
  • School
  • Hobbies and free time
  • Where I live
  • Holidays

Year 8 French students study:

  • The media
  • Being a tourist
  • Who I am
  • My home
  • My hopes and ambitions

Year 9 French students study:

  • My social life
  • Healthy living
  • My future
  • Holidays
  • Rights and responsibilities
  • KS3 Spanish

Students starting Spanish in Years 7 study the following topics:

  • Greetings and personal details,
  • School
  • Food and drink
  • Family and pets
  • Home life
  • Free Time
  • Home town

Students studying Spanish in Year 8 and 9 study the following topics:

  • Friends and family
  • Daily routine
  • Going out
  • Holidays
  • Food and shopping
  • Fashion
  • Barcelona

Key stage 4 – French and Spanish

All students follow the AQA GCSE course in either French or Spanish and will be graded according to the AQA examination board gradings of 1-9.

This qualification is linear which means that students will sit all their exams at the end of the course.
