Individual Character Education (ICE)

Curriculum Intent

In addition to the National Curriculum aims, our ambitious curriculum for ICE (PSHE) at DSTC is designed to:

  • Promote an understanding of and respect for diverse backgrounds and perspectives, encouraging students to appreciate differences and foster an inclusive school environment.

  • Promote healthy relationships by educating students about the importance of respectful, consensual and healthy relationships. Lessons provide students with the skills to navigate interpersonal dynamics effectively.
  • Support students with the knowledge and skills to engage actively and positively in the school and home communities, understanding their rights and responsibilities as students and citizens.

Complementary Subjects:

  • Physical Education - beyond physical fitness, PE promotes teamwork, respect, and personal responsibility, which are integral to social skills and healthy relationships.
  • Religious Education - Encourages discussions about ethics, morality, and different belief systems which can enhance students understanding of citizenship and ethical decision making
  • Science - Discussions regarding health education can also reinforce the importance of informed decision making regarding personal and public health.
  • Humanities - ICE lessons can provide historical context to current social situations, helping students understand the complexities of citizenship and ethical behaviour in different cultures. PSHE also encourages critical thinking around the role as a citizen of the UK and DSTC community.
  • English - ICE ensures students think and literacy analysis and studies themes related to identity, morality, and social justice .It also enhances communication skills by allowing students to express their thoughts and ideas clearly, which is effective for writing and oral presentations in English
  • Languages - ICE promotes cultural awareness and respect for students' diversity, enhancing appreciation for different cultures and languages.
